This is a psalm of praise; it is probable that David was the penman of it, but we are not told so, because God would have us look above the penmen of sacred writ, to that blessed Spirit that moved and guided them. The psalmist, in this psalm, I. Calls upon the righteous to praise God (Psa 33:1-3). II. Furnishes us with matter for praise. We must praise God, 1. For his justice, goodness, and truth, appearing in his word, and in all his works (Psa 33:4, Psa 33:5). 2. For his power appearing in the work of creation (Psa 33:6-9). 3. For the sovereignty of his providence in the government of the world (Psa 33:10, Psa 33:11) and again (Psa 33:13-17). 4. For the peculiar favour which he bears to his own chosen people, which encourages them to trust in him (Psa 33:12) and again (Psa 33:18-22). We need not be at a loss for proper thoughts in singing this psalm, which so naturally expresses the pious affections of a devout soul towards God.

The Steadfast Love of the Lord
1Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: for it becommeth vpright men to be thankefull. 2Prayse the Lord with harpe: sing vnto him with viole and instrument of ten strings. 3Sing vnto him a newe song: sing cheerefully with a loude voyce. 4For the word of the Lord is righteous, and all his workes are faithfull. 5He loueth righteousnesse and iudgement: the earth is full of the goodnesse of the Lord. 6By the worde of the Lord were the heauens made, and all the hoste of them by the breath of his mouth. 7He gathereth the waters of the sea together as vpon an heape, and layeth vp the depths in his treasures. 8Let all the earth feare the Lord: let al them that dwell in the world, feare him. 9For he spake, and it was done: he commanded, and it stood. 10The Lord breaketh the counsell of the heathen, and bringeth to nought the deuices of the people. 11The counsell of the Lord shall stand for euer, and the thoughts of his heart throughout all ages. 12Blessed is that nation, whose God is the Lord: euen the people that he hath chosen for his inheritance. 13The Lord looketh downe from heauen, and beholdeth all the children of men. 14From the habitation of his dwelling he beholdeth all them that dwell in the earth. 15He facioneth their hearts euery one, and vnderstandeth all their workes. 16The King is not saued by the multitude of an hoste, neither is the mightie man deliuered by great strength. 17A horse is a vaine helpe, and shall not deliuer any by his great strength. 18Beholde, the eye of the Lord is vpon them that feare him, and vpon them, that trust in his mercie, 19To deliuer their soules from death, and to preserue them in famine. 20Our soule waiteth for the Lord: for he is our helpe and our shielde. 21Surely our heart shall reioyce in him, because we trusted in his holy Name. 22Let thy mercie, O Lord, be vpon vs, as we trust in thee.
