What the Bible says

What does the Bible say about anxiety?

Scripture takes anxiety seriously and does not shame the anxious: it invites them to cast all their anxieties on God, because he cares for them (1 Peter 5:7). Jesus points worried disciples to their heavenly Father, who feeds the birds and clothes the lilies (Matthew 6:25-34), and Paul calls believers to bring every need to God in prayer with thanksgiving, promising the peace of God that guards hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7).

Key Bible verses about anxiety

  1. Philippians 4:6-7

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

  2. 1 Peter 5:6-7

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time, casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

  3. Matthew 6:31-34

“Therefore don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

  4. Matthew 6:26

See the birds of the sky, that they don’t sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of much more value than they?

  5. Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul.

  7. Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

  8. John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

  9. Psalm 46:1-3

For the Chief Musician. By the sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling. Selah.

  10. Proverbs 12:25

Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but a kind word makes it glad.

  11. Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

  12. Psalm 56:3-4

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. In God, I praise his word. In God, I put my trust. I will not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?
