What the Bible says

What does the Bible say about work?

Work belongs to God’s good design from before the fall: the Lord put man in the garden “to work it and keep it” (Genesis 2:15). Since the fall work involves toil, but Christians are to work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men (Colossians 3:23-24), to provide for themselves and their families, and to have something to share with anyone in need (Ephesians 4:28; 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12).

Key Bible verses about work

  1. Genesis 2:15

    The LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.

  2. Genesis 3:17-19

    To Adam he said, “Because you have listened to your wife’s voice, and have eaten from the tree, about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ the ground is cursed for your sake. You will eat from it with much labor all the days of your life. It will yield thorns and thistles to you; and you will eat the herb of the field. You will eat bread by the sweat of your face until you return to the ground, for you were taken out of it. For you are dust, and you shall return to dust.”

  3. Exodus 20:9-10

    You shall labor six days, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your livestock, nor your stranger who is within your gates;

  6. Ephesians 6:5-8

    Servants, be obedient to those who according to the flesh are your masters, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as to Christ, not in the way of service only when eyes are on you, as men pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, with good will doing service as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that whatever good thing each one does, he will receive the same good again from the Lord, whether he is bound or free.

  7. 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12

    For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: “If anyone is not willing to work, don’t let him eat.” For we hear of some who walk among you in rebellion, who don’t work at all, but are busybodies. Now those who are that way, we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ, that they work with quietness and eat their own bread.

    Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways, and be wise; which having no chief, overseer, or ruler, provides her bread in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.

  10. Proverbs 14:23

    In all hard work there is profit, but the talk of the lips leads only to poverty.

  11. Ecclesiastes 9:10
