What the Bible says
What does the Bible say about idolatry?
Idolatry is giving to anything else the worship, trust and love that belong to God alone. The first two commandments forbid having other gods and making images to worship (Exodus 20:3-5), and the New Testament warns that covetousness is idolatry (Colossians 3:5), because the heart can worship created things as much as carved ones. The gospel turns people “to God from idols to serve the living and true God” (1 Thessalonians 1:9).
Key Bible verses about idolatry
- Exodus 20:3-5
“You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me,
- Psalm 115:4-8
Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they don’t speak. They have eyes, but they don’t see. They have ears, but they don’t hear. They have noses, but they don’t smell. They have hands, but they don’t feel. They have feet, but they don’t walk, neither do they speak through their throat. Those who make them will be like them; yes, everyone who trusts in them.
- Isaiah 44:9-10
Everyone who makes a carved image is vain. The things that they delight in will not profit. Their own witnesses don’t see, nor know, that they may be disappointed. Who has fashioned a god, or molds an image that is profitable for nothing?
- Jonah 2:8
Those who regard vain idols forsake their own mercy.
- Ezekiel 14:3
“Son of man, these men have taken their idols into their heart, and put the stumbling block of their iniquity before their face. Should I be inquired of at all by them?
- Romans 1:22-25
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and traded the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, four-footed animals, and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to uncleanness, that their bodies should be dishonored among themselves; who exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
- Acts 17:29
Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold, or silver, or stone, engraved by art and design of man.
- 1 Corinthians 10:14
Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
- Colossians 3:5
Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
- Galatians 5:19-21
Now the deeds of the flesh are obvious, which are: adultery, sexual immorality, uncleanness, lustfulness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit God’s Kingdom.
- 1 Thessalonians 1:9
For they themselves report concerning us what kind of a reception we had from you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God,
- 1 John 5:21
Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
